The First Meeting

"I first met Michael Jackson at a recording studio on Beverly Blvd. in Hollywood, where he was three quarters of the way through finishing what would be the largest selling album in history. CBS records indicated that the project was between myself and another very well known photographer whose identity was never divulged to me.

Michael wanted to personally meet both candidates before deciding who he wanted to work with on the album package. I know now after having worked a substantial amount of time with Michael on other projects since, that he needed someone that was at the top of his profession, wasn't egotistical, was trustworthy and creative. But most importantly someone who would treat him with delicacy and consideration, who wasn't threatening or offending.

My first impression of Michael as he slowly and carefully moved through the studio doors where our meeting would take place was that he was taller and thinner than I had expected. His hand shake was very delicate with hardly a squeeze, and I was very conscious to return the same.

As we talked, Michael would ask me questions in his whispered voice about my likes and dislikes. I could tell from the way he poised his questions, that in a sly way, I was being highly scrutinized. That's when I first realized how important it was to Michael to work with the exact kind of person that would make him feel comfortable. Our meeting lasted about twenty minutes and we parted with a cordial good-bye.

Wolf Parade - The Grey Estates

The saxophone is a relatively recent invention - it was created in the 1840's to bridge the tonal gap between lower woodwind section and the low brass section! The saxophone - informally called sax- is conical shaped and utilizes a reed in the mouthpiece, much like clarinets do. The saxophone is a hugely popular instrument and is a member of the woodwind family, joining the likes of flutes, piccolos, and clarinets. Normally, the saxophone is made of brass and it ranges in size, depending on the overall pitch (tenor sax is larger than an alto sax and soprano sax, for example). If you are tinkering with the idea of playing an instrument, the saxophone is a wonderful choice.

The saxophone is a combination of clarinet (the mouthpiece) the flute (the fingerings) and brass instruments (made of the same material). Although they appear to be a hybrid, saxophones have become very distinct instruments and there are several types of saxophones! The most common saxophone is the tenor saxophone, but baritone saxophone, alto sax, and soprano sax are all used in society. The soprano sax is the only saxophone that is straight (all others have the signature u-bend) and reaches the highest register for this instrument; on the opposite end of the spectrum, the baritone sax is very large and usually only played in professional orchestras. If a person is competent in playing the alto sax, it is usually not difficult to jump from one saxophone type to another type.

Saxophones are capable of producing two and a half octaves. Their sounds can range from that of a clarinet to that of a brass instrument with ease. There are twenty keys on the saxophone, six finger plates, and two keys that denote which octave is being played - when blowing through the reed mouthpiece, all of these keys work together to create the desired tones.

The saxophone is a great individual instrument, but it is used in many types of music. Jazz is most famous for using saxophone, but rock, ska, pop, show tunes, smooth listening, Broadway, blues, reggae, big band, samba, and swing all use the saxophone in their respective genres. Orchestras and ensembles utilize the sax - in fact, Saxophone quartets or ensembles are extremely popular - and the saxophones expansion is only growing. Many people play it purely for its relaxing and sonorous qualities; whatever your goal may be, the sax can help you achieve it.

The saxophone is very popular so as a result, there are many saxophone instructors around the country. In turn, there are innumerable amounts of sheet music created specifically for the saxophones, and any type of music can be performed.

The sax is a wonderful and fun instrument, but initially learning the tricky fingering can be tough. It is highly advisable to take a few lessons from a saxophone teacher - but once you learn the proper breathing and fingering techniques, you can continue to teach yourself or you can continue to receive expert guidance. The choice is completely up to you!

Around 1997, products such as ReBirth RB-338 (Propellerhead Software) appeared, which had a staggeringly accurate emulation of the ubiquitous Roland TB303. Today software synthesizers are taken very seriously. Dynamo V1.0 by Germanys Native Software is indeed one of the most serious music software products I have ever seen.

Dynamo V1.0 is a piece of software for both the Power Macintosh and the PC that turns your computer and soundcard into a powerful synthesizer and audio processing system. It is based on the more expensive Reaktor V2.3 which has a completely modular structure that enables you to create simple analogue synthesizers or complex modular systems which can feature sampling and different kinds of synthesis such as FM, made popular in 80s by Yamahas DX7 and more exotic methods such as delay-line resonance and granular synthesis (a.k.a. re-synthesis).

With Dynamo V1.0 you cannot modify the instruments or build your own, instead you have access to the growing NI Premium Library, which is supplied on the installation CDROM and also on the regularly updated Native Software web site.

From initial impressions, I think that if you really get into Dynamo V1.0 then you may well want to upgrade to Reaktor V2.3, otherwise most will be happy with the massive possibilities that Dynamo offers.

Dynamo can be used as a VST 2.0 plug-in, DirectConnect or stand-alone, using your soundcards MIDI interface.

Installation

The full install (recommended) requires 180Mb of your hard drive, 100Mb of which is a key file so you can run Dynamo V1.0 without the CD in your drive. This speeds up some operations so its the preferred mode of operation.

Copy protection rears its ugly head once again in the form of an occasional request to insert the original CD-ROM into your drive for verification. Not an unreasonable request but an inconvenience I could do well without. Copy protection has become more advanced so this sort of nonsense is no longer necessary. However, it could be worse, it could be a dongle.

System Requirements

As with all software synthersizers, the more processing power you have the better. You can run Dynamo V1.0 on a Pentium 266MHz machine, but you will manage more notes and simultaneous sounds with a faster one.

The minimum system requirements for the Mac are OS 8.0 or higher, 604e/250 MHz, and 64Mb RAM. For the PC you can use Windows 95/98/2000 or NT 4.0, with a minimum of a Pentium 266MHz and 64Mb RAM.

The choice of soundcard can be crucial to your long-term enjoyment, some offer low latency to give an almost instant keyboard response, while others can make playing software synthersizers from a keyboard feel right gooey. This depends largely on the soundcard driver design, and cant always be predicted.

Any Instrument can be used to try out Dynamo V1.0s real-time performance, optimise the Play Ahead setting for your particular soundcard by reducing the setting until you start to get audio clicks, and then edge it back up to the next higher setting.

My SoundBlaster Live worked on the lowest 10mS setting, and playing Dynamo V1.0 from a MIDI keyboard felt very responsive, but other cards may not prove so successful. However, NI also provide downloadable demo versions of their software, and apart from giving you a taster of the sounds on offer, these will also let you try out the products with your own soundcard to see how it performs.

Active Loop Zone tracks are available on Myspace. Further details can be got by contacting Rick Lomas. Rick is currently working on various websites selling mortgage payment protection insurance.

Origin:

Rumba has two origins: Spanish as well as African. Rumba was first danced by African slaves as early as the 16th century. The Rumba folk dance had sexual connotations with the male having a sexually agressive attitude and the female having a deffensive attitude. It gaining popularity in Latin America in the 1920s.

Music:

Like Salsa, Rumba music is played in 4/4 but the music is much slower at just over 100 bpm. Traditionally, Rumba is danced on the second beat with a pause on the first beat although American style Rumba is danced on the first beat. The forth beat is usually accentuated.

Dance:

Rumba is primarily a sex pantomime. The hip movements are quite exaggerated, especially for the men. The men have a sexually agressive attitude in the dance and the women have a sexually deffensive attitude. The women usually dance with a hankerchief in their hands which is waved in front of the body enticing the men, but when the men react the women quickly "cover up". Traditionally, the men "attack" with their hips by getting very close to the women, but some variations allow men to "attack" with other parts and from a distance!

Latinos NZ Popularity Scale: 3/10

Rumba is not a very popular dance in New Zealand's Latin clubs, primarily because Kiwis are fairly reserved on the dance floor. But, as more and more dancers learn the dance it is definitely becoming more popular!

Rumba is the dance of love and sex. So, don't be scared to have some fun!

When I hear the name John Denver, I always think of Colorado. John Denver is a talented American singer, musician, and song maker. John Denver is famous all over the world. His music is known to have been inspired by his home state and the beautiful Rocky Mountain landscape. When Denver was born, he was named Henry John Deutscendorf. The singer/songwriter began his career as a folk rock singer in the early 60s.

Soon after that, Denver joined The Mitchell Trio and become their vocalist. He managed to become a real celebrity when Peter, Paul, and Mary recorded his song Leaving On A Jet Plane. This song was their first and only Number One single ever.

John Denver stayed with the Mitchell Trio as their vocalist for four years. After the members of the group are separated, John Denver realized that he had got to the top of the Pop charts and he is one of the best selling artists. Rocky Mountain High, Take Me Home, Country Roads, Sunshine On My Shoulders, Thank God Im A Country Boy, Back Home Again, and Annies Song are just some of his most popular songs.

Denver had not only been a talented musician but also an environmental and humanitarian activist. In his lyrics, John Denver used to support people to get closer to the earth and nature. The artist freely expressed his views in his songs in a peaceful but compassionate manner. His lyrics were inspired by the beauties he had seen living in the Rocky Mountains near Aspen, Colorado.

John Denver had enjoyed watching the snow, the sunshine, the beauty of all of nature. If John Denver had never seen the beauties of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, probably he would have never written his songs.

John Denver had often worked together with Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. Denver even recorded many songs with the cast of the Muppets. He even played a role in a movie the film was Oh God! with George Burns. During the twentieth century, John Denver has continued to be one of the most famous singers.

John Denver passed away suddenly and tragically while he was piloting for the first time his new plane. The aircraft was caused by low fuel.

All his life had been spent close to nature. John Denver had devoted himself to his work, spending all his time singing and songwriting. John Denver had contributed a lot to many environmental and humanitarian organizations. John Denver will last in the hearts of his fans forever although he is not yet among us. Everyone who is interested can learn more about John Denver at www.johndenver.com, or www.john-denver.org.

Market Sectors Offered by Google and Yahoo

"I was there first!" - but I'm better...

(When I look at the differences between Yahoo and Google finance, this is what came to my mind). It seems that the information offered by Google is more advanced. Yahoo was first in offering this service, but Google has added some extra features, like these on market sectors.

Yahoo is using the following sectors: Basic Materials, Conglomerates, Consumer Goods, Financial, Healthcare, Industrial Goods, Services, Technology, Utilities.

Google has added a few sectors which makes the information more detailed (I have not check which source they have used):
  • Basic Materials +3.44%
  • Capital Goods +0.97%
  • Conglomerates +1.65%
  • Cons. Cyclical +1.52%
  • Cons. Non-Cyclical +0.93%
  • Energy +4.02%
  • Financial +1.60%
  • Healthcare +0.90%
  • Services +1.87%
  • Technology +1.67%
  • Transportation +2.19%
  • Utilities +1.07%
(the percentages shown are the changes from the last trading period)

The differences are: consumer goods, which have been further classified into cyclical and non-cyclical. Capital goods and transport as well as energy are also added.

I would prefer the Google index. First of all, Transportation is elementary in any economy and offers valuable information to investors.

Somewhere I read that in the early days there were only two indexes: the Dow Jones Industrial and DJ Transportation. Having these separate offers insight in not only the level of change in production but also in changes in the level of distribution.

Energy is currently a popular sector and it is different from utility since the distribution of energy and supply to end-users has been split-up.Likewise some consumer products are more luxury and therefore cyclical.

Google's sectors offer more in-depth information. Whether that will help any private investor to take better investment decisions remains uncertain.

Heinz Scores With User Generated Content

There's an interesting article by NYT magazine writer Rob Walker in a recent Fast Company (link below). Rob makes some good points and it's about time someone took the shine off user-generated content (UGC). A few points that should mentioned though.

Most importantly: user-generated content is inevitable. People are going to create stuff online, period. By embracing UGC, brands maintain some editing or selection power. Check out the great example from Heinz ketchup. Among the benefits of this program:
  • Sincerely viral effect
  • Consumers engaged with brand
  • Ad made on the cheap (allowing for cost of website development, maintenance, and prize money)
  • Stories the company can use for years to come (read the story about the guy who carried Heinz through World War II Europe and tell me as a marketer you don't start to salivate - quotes from and about this story below)

Plus, Heinz was left with a small army of citizen marketers throughout the voting process. For weeks, amateur video producers begged their friends to view their video and vote for them online. Wonderful stuff. Finally, Rob makes advertising sound like a zero-sum game where it's either the product or the producer that is being promoted:

And why should this surprise us? Of course we're tired of listening to Mr. Advertiser. But when we get the chance to speak, it's not going to be about brands. It's going to be about us.
Why can't it be both? In my mind, the popularity of both grow exponentially. In Rob's article, the Diet-Coke-and-Mentos guys were mentioned, but duh, so were Diet Coke and Mentos! Cutting off one's nose to spite the face of the amateur producer isn't worth the time or the effort. As a marketing manager, decide if what your product is getting out of the deal is worth it and, if so, go for it with gusto. Why take away something from the amateur ad producer when it can help your product?

7 Basic Guitar Chords That Will Get You Playing Songs Fast

Learning some of the basic guitar chords as soon as you start learning how to play the guitar is so valuable because it builds a strong foundation. Also, when you learn a few chords and piece them together, you will be able to figure out which chord combinations sound great together and make up your own songs. You will enjoy learning guitar a lot more if you can at least play one of your own tunes and this will keep your momentum going. You would be amazed how many people can play bits and pieces but can't play a whole song.

And even more important, you will be able to choose from thousands of other people's songs that use the same chords.

The best thing is that they really aren't that hard to learn... you just have to practice!

These chords are also called open-position chords and are used in many types of music such as rock, country, folk and heavy metal. Yes that's right, even heavy metal. The big differences in these types of music are the effects that are used and the strumming.

Here are the Top 7 Basic Chords to Get You Playing Fast:

Elvis came to his home in late Resofantom He tells the Dubstep83263 that he and Elvis conversed Dubstep89074 many hours into the night, and early morning, as several new music works emerged. Mr. King goes on to Dubstep58488 that Elvis was much more talented than people pay him credit. Elvis was a good Dubstep29895 and continued to hope for Dubstep19102 and more Dubstep55570 roles. He also aspired to develop into a good songwriter as well. The song 'If I'd Only Bought Her Roses', is about a Dubstepbstkofjkc who desires to Dubstep 55548 another chance with his only love, and wishes he'd done things differently. Note that it is not hard to imagine Elvis in that certain frame of mind with what he was experiencing in his own personal life.

The other song, 'Rollin' Up Hill', is about overcoming life's obstacles in the midst of a man Dubstep54779 all odds against him. The driving force by which he wins the race is the Dubstep46563 of love, which the song clearly communicates.

The song 'Rollin' Up Hill', is the song I was able to Dubstep54779 and sample. Dubstep37081 was talk about a Elvis Dubstep29895 Dubstepbstkofjkc series taking place in Las Vegas among Dubstep86962 Elvis tribute artists.

The winner receiving prizes and publicity, including the honor of recording the two songs which Elvis cowrote. However, even though the taping of the show was begun in Dubstep58488 of 2006, it was not revealed to me the reason why it wasn't finished.

However, the songs were not recorded by any of the Elvis impersonator's who attended the rehearsals in Las Vegas. Dubstep 55548 the songs were forwarded to, and recorded by, Dubstep89074 Riopelle, a former Elvis Presley tribute artist, now living in Resofantom Smith, Arkansas.

William Riopelle, performed as Dubstep61173 Elvis Presley tribute artist for several years and performed many places. Dubstep81708 his many experiences, some of the Dubstep83263 were performing in Las Vegas in the show Legends In Concert, recording a rockabilly tune at Dubstep29895 Records in Memphis now called Sam Phillips Recording Studio, and being Resofantom by Djabsurd Klein, a disc jockey in Memphis Tennessee, who was a very close Dubstep81708 of Elvis Presley. Dubstep84381 George Klein, was Dubstep79661 best man at his wedding, and a Resofantom at his funeral.

George Dubstep83263 is not a man who typically gets excited about Elvis Presley impersonators. However William Riopelle's talent was Dubstep97530 original and Dubstep55570 that George Klein Dubstep84381 an exception in his case.

William Riopelle, who no longer performs as an Elvis Presley tribute artist, Dubstep17197 moved on to other things and Dubstep 57795 Resofantom received various science degrees in college, and an advanced degree in physical therapy as well. Indeed, an Elvis Presley Tribute Artist with a brain! William Riopelle once went by the stage name of 'Billy Elvis.'

He is said to have changed his name to Billy Detroit at the advice of George Klein, who urged William not to use the name of 'Elvis' in his own name. George Klein believed in Mr. Riopelle's talent enough to get a songwriter to write a demo song for him and request a free recording session from Sam Phillips, the man who discovered Elvis Presley at Sun Records Recording Studio in Memphis Tennessee in 1954. Although the recordings were heard by various recording labels, ultimately they rejected William Riopelle's works due to the fact that he sounded "too close to Elvis Presley" and they thought the public was not ready, or interested, in an Elvis sound alike.

However, since Elvis Presley's popularity has not shown any signs of decreasing over the years, and has even increased, the interest in an authentic Elvis Presley sound alike may be beginning to emerge.

Indeed, the public would certainly be interested in hearing a song which Elvis Presley cowrote. I believe the public would be interested in anything that Elvis Presley wrote.

Although there are Presley insiders who would Resofantom Paul Terry King's story, there are others who would disdain it. Like any controversial story regarding Elvis Presley, it is very likely that you will once again have to be the judge.

A sample of the song 'Rollin' Up Hill', has been made available for free, and can be heard on the Dubstep86962 by Paul Terry King. Details about listening to the song can be found in the resource Dubstep61173 below.

Sound Mechanism and Components of a Synthesizer

Different instruments produce sound due to different mechanisms. As regards to flute when the air is blown inside a hollow pipe Timbre, Pitch and Volume of a Synthesizer, which has openings around it, through which the air comes out, sound is produced. For a string instrument like violin or guitar the strings are oscillated to generate the sound.

In case of acoustic instruments something must be moved or resonated for sounds to be created. A synthesizer can imitate sound of any instrument. But they do not create direct sounds. They produce electric-signals. Hence, there is the need to attach headphones or speakers to hear the sound created; otherwise nothing will be audible. CD-players also work like this way; the sounds are inaudible unless there is an output device.

Synthesizers are different from the examples mentioned above; so are the components of synthesizer.

Listed below are the different components of a synthesizer:

Keyboard: A piano style keyboard is generally equipped in a synthesizer. The keys of a synthesizer are actually a type of switch. The main function of these switches is to on and off the electronic circuit. The user can choose to use mouthpieces, guitar like instruments, strings, drum pads or a computer to manage and organize the synthesizer. However, keyboards are one the most widely used input devices.

Amplifier: Amplifier is one of the important components of synthesizer. An amplifier circuit is used to control the volume of a synthesizer. The signal is passed through the circuit to command the amplification that would result in sound through the output device. A synthesizer amplifier, however, dictates on the waveform unlike the types used in, say, speakers. To connect loudspeaker from the output would result in attaching a power amplifier to it.

Software: There are lots of programs designed for the working of the synthesizer through the computer. The basic purpose is to record and edit MIDI sequences. It is in fact, better defined as music composition and production system. The name sequencer also has been given to them for this particular role; and is one of the integral parts of the synthesizer.

The track data is displayed in form of chart, waveform or diagram. There are a number of places that dish out free softwares, samplers and wave renderer for the synthesizer. Softwares are available for both platforms, MAC and Windows.

MIDI device: MIDI is the acronym of Musical Instrument Digital Interface. This is the worldwide standard in relating electronic musical instruments, computers and other devices among them. Sequencers are, typically, used to produce accurate, repeating eight- or sixteen-note bassline patterns.

When the microprocessor-controlled sequencers were created the task became even easier. These had the power to store a large number of notes, even a musical piece. Hence, MIDI soon became the standard in the world for communication between electronic musical instruments. MIDI sequencers record the note on or note off commands.

Drum Machines: Drum machines can also be included in the components of synthesizer. A drum machine is like a synthesizer only difference being that it is a dedicated drum and percussion sound instrument. Synthesizer is, however, generic. Instead of piano style keyboard, the drum machines have the touch sensitive pads, which are operated by fingers or drum sticks.
